I like the idea presented in this blog to get some marketing gurus to work their magic on condoms. This follows a study of 1400 sexual active young people--all of whom reported having had unprotected sex in the preceding 90 days. The study suggests that young people avoid condoms because they think condoms detract from pleasure and because they worry that their partners will disapprove. And condom use does not necessarily increase with age or education level. I've already written that I think comprehensive sex ed is key, but of course there are no simple answers here.

I think you are right about the need for a good advertising campaign. I was half-listening to a NPR piece the other day that was talking about the anti-smoking ads (the ones where they are comparing smoking to licking a garbage can, etc.), and the general idea was that they were effective.
I think one of the other big issues is that since HIV/AIDS treatments have had such advances, people don't see it as such big a threat anymore. I wouldn't be surprised if the thought of HIV/AIDS barely, if at all crosses the minds of teens right now when considering sex.
Of course, no matter what is done, we are always going to be fighting the cognitive development of teens and their mistaken invincibility. I guess we have our work cut out for us!
